Even the best of jet ski riders can flip or fall from their ski. Getting back on can be a bit tricky.
Two things to remember when reboarding a jet ski are:
1. Never reboard a jet ski from the side. They were not designed for this and your weight can pull the ski over on you and flip it.
I get this call about once a week. Customer says they started the ski on the trailer, blipped the throttle and it started running really fast. Letting go of the throttle did nothing. Pulled the safety lanyard and it still didn’t quit. Pulled the spark plug wires and that doesn’t make it quit. Finally, they thought to pull the choke, and that killed it.
First, how could this happen?
Jet ski spark plugs, their care and use have both similarities and differences to a car.
What is a spark plug
The basic requirements for a cylinder lining, either steel or nicasil, are wear and galling resistance and minimal oil consumption.
In the beginning, engines used steel or iron blocks, and the cylinders were just cut into the block.

We have all seen it in the movies or as we are boating or walking along the beach…beached jet skis, half in the water and half on the sand. Visions of riding your ski around in the water and just running up onto the beach and hopping off for a rest before racing back out for some more water fun dance in your head.
When buying a used jet ski, what ski is right for you?
Used jet ski price – The tipping point is about $3000. Most used 4 strokes are going to cost more than $3000, going up to about $10,000. I see good 2 strokes sell for as little as $1000 and very nice units for $2500.
Which used jet ski to choose –
When flushing your ski, DO NOT turn the water on full force. It can cause damage to electrical and other motor parts.
A customer sent a FB message this morning and asked “Are WSM or SBT pistons any good in my jet ski?”
The simple answer is yes, they are fine. The more accurate answer is it doesn’t really matter.
The piston IS NOT a failure item – we are replacing pistons (in watercraft) due to wear or a failure that was NOT the pistons fault.

A little jet ski history for you.
The original jet skis, early and mid 90s Sea Doo XPs, Yamaha Raiders and Ventures, Kawasaki Zxi and 750s(stand-ups and early sit-downs) were small and unstable, but fun, cheap and great for playing around close to shore.
In the mid 90s, we saw significant improvement in skis with the Yamaha GP, GPR and XLs, Sea Doo RX and XP Limited, and Kawasaki STX and Ultra. These skis started to get bigger and more powerful. For ultimate performance (at least bang for your buck) these are some of the best buying choices.
First, to be sure that we understand what we are talking about, let’s define a few words often used when talking about jet skis.
Definitions and Questions
The biggest hurdle in used jet ski purchases….”It ran great the day I bought it, but the second time I ran it, it quit. Now it won’t start. I think the guy sold me a bad jet ski.”
When you close the tow valve when towing your ski, tie your key to the hose. This way you will remember to open the valve when you start your ski again.
Your fun day on the water just came to an end because of a problem with your jet ski.
