The last of the Yamaha two strokes (99-06) were the GPR 1200 and 1300 and the XLT 1200. These are referred to as PV skis because of the presence of power valves.

When designing a two stroke exhaust system you can optimize it for top end or bottom end performance. An engine with max power at high rpms might be weak at lower speeds. The power valve is a small gate that fools the motor into thinking it has two exhaust chambers – a smaller one for low speed and when the valve opens, a larger one for higher speeds.
