Your fun day on the water just came to an end because of a problem with your jet ski.
It is going to be a slow ride to shore, with some options much slower than others. Ever try to paddle a jet ski like a canoe?
Towing the jet ski with either a boat or another jet ski is going to be the easiest way, but you can’t just tie a rope to the front of the ski and pull.
If you read thru your owners manual there will be some clear guidelines for towing your ski. The most important being the speed you can tow the ski at. Usually 5mph or slower.
This is because a jet ski engine’s exhaust system is also part of the ski’s cooling system. Skis use water from the jet pump to cool the engine. When a ski is towed, pressure builds as the water washes through the pump, forcing water into the cooling system and eventually flooding your engine, which may very well have some water in it already (possibly from the problem that stopped your engine to begin with).
Tow valves are a must when towing. I have no idea why manufacturers don’t put these on their skis when they are built!
Installing a tow valve on the main feed line between the pump and the engine can save you time and money in the event of a breakdown on the water. The valve is open when operating and enjoying your ski, allowing the exhaust water to cool the motor. You reach in and close the valve to stop water from “back-washing” into the motor when towing.
There are several ways to clamp off this hose. Vise grips, brass fitting from your local hardware store and other clamping devises. My suggestion is a WAVEEATER TOW VALVE with a simple on/off petcock system. It is a smart investment and simple addition to your ski that can save a lot of heart ache and money when a ski needs to be towed.
Easy to install, easy to use, easy and safe for towing. We carry WAVEEATER TOW VALVES and other WAVEEATER products at The Jet Ski Store. Give us a call, 727-329-8940, if you have any questions.
PRO TIP: When you close the valve, tie your key to the hose. This way you will remember to open the valve when you start your ski again.
