A tow tube is great way to enjoy jet skiing with family and friends. With the dozens of available options, there is definitely one to fit your needs and budget.
In Florida, as is the law in most other places, you cannot tow more people than you can fit on the vessel, and you must have a spotter or a wide-angle rear view ski mirror to allow the operator to observe the towed person at all times. This means if you have a three person jet ski, you cannot tow more than two people (two being towed and the driver), providing you have the correct mirror.
Finding the perfect tow tube is easy, but not all that is needed.
Along with your tow tube, you will need a good quality tow rope. Tube tow ropes are different from water ski tow ropes. They have higher breaking strengths and less stretch, along with loops at both ends for fast and easy connections. Tow ropes should be between 50 and 65 feet in length.
Each person being towed, along with the jet ski driver, must wear a life vest. Never fit a child with an adult sized vest, have the proper vest for each rider.
With 50-65 feet of rope behind your jet ski, there is always the opportunity for entanglement. While you can purchase an impeller protector to keep the rope from becoming wrapped with the impeller, there is a simple fix that you can use also. Slide and attach one or two pool noodles over the first 10 feet of rope at the jet ski end. This will keep the rope afloat and away from your impeller.
You have your tow tube, you have your tow rope, you have your life vests, and you have a pool noodle or two…. it’s time to enjoy!
