If you are going to work on your own ski, you are going to need some tools. After a basic set of hand tools there are some special tools just for working on jet skis, and these tools are different for each jet ski manufacturer. You are going to probably run into this first when working on pumps.
SPECIAL PUMP TOOLS – if you are going to remove the impeller and shaft, you are going to need a tool to hold the SHAFT.
I have seen some interesting improvisions, but the correct tool is the shaft holder.
The process is then straight forward, put holder onto end of shaft and turn the impeller (COUNTER CLOCKWISE FOR MOST YAMAHA – NOT righty tighty).
You will need a good method to hold the shaft holding tool (either a good vice or a big wrench locked down in some way). On the impeller side, I use a box wrench (round side) that has been cut off and I put a 6 foot breaker bar on it.
When used right, these tools make removing the impeller an easy job.
YOU MUST use a long breaker bar. This is not due to the amount of energy you need, but the quality – smooth even pressure – provided by the long breaker bar.
YOU MUST use a very good vice. The vice I use cost nearly $1000 new – now, you don’t need one this mean, but a $39 HF vise will fail when assaulted with a 6 foot breaker bar (yeah, I’ve got some broken vices).
